Traditional wisdom says to keep copies of income tax returns for a lowest of three years. However, if the IRS thinks fraud or if it considers no return has been filed, then there is no restrict on the number of years it can go back for evaluation. Better idea: Keep copies of tax returns consistently, along with proof of mailing, in order to have proof that the returns were filed.
