Start your interview plan with the job information and a simple sheet of paper folded in half length-wise. Any job posting has a job explanation and a listing of certification. Take the top four to six credentials for the job. List these on the left hand side. Re-read the description. Ask yourself the key three of four ‘soft-skills’ needed for this job. (Soft-skills are things like being a team player, or being structured or being patient with clients). List these skills below the qualifications. Unfold the paper and you have a left-hand side with qualifications and soft-skills. On the right side there is a lot of space. For each item on the left, now write on the right-side how you meet these qualifications or skills.
Place a check beside each of these that you have a ‘story’ from your work history for. If you don’t have a work history, cite a volunteer experience, or unpaid encounter. Place a second check beside each of these that you can tie to your resume. Even volunteer experience and unpaid encounter needs to be on your resume. You can have a section detailing non-paid or volunteer experience, or have it under the personal details or under interests.
Place the third check by any of these answers that you have practiced. Practice the stories and answers in front of a friend, or a mirror. If you can’t do either of these practice in front of your pet (yes, I’m serious) or child. It helps people prepare answers to have a run through with an audience. Below all of these place the contact information (including the job title) for your interview. If you have multiple interviewers, you should know names and titles for each.
